About
The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum (LALSRM) is a non-profit public-benefit corporation founded in 1956 to promote live steam and scale model railroad technology. Located in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, the museum operates a 7+1⁄2 inch gauge miniature railway where visitors can ride on locomotives to experience the intricate details of these incredible machines. Initially focused on steam-powered model locomotives, the museum has expanded to include gasoline-powered models of diesel locomotives and battery-electric locomotives and trolleys, offering a diverse range of experiences for railway enthusiasts.
The museum’s Walt Disney Family Foundation loaned the Carolwood Barn to the City of Los Angeles in 1999, which is now located within the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum complex. This barn houses an extensive collection of Disney and steam-train-related memorabilia, making it a unique attraction for visitors interested in Walt Disney’s passion for trains. The museum offers complimentary public admission to these exhibits on the third Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., coinciding with demonstrations of the stationary steam plant. Volunteers from the Carolwood Society are available during these times to provide information, tours, and insights into Walt Disney’s connection with railroading.
In addition to its live steam layouts, the museum hosts two live steam gatherings per year for visiting hobbyists and various themed fundraisers and charity events. The museum’s extensive facilities include multiple smaller gauge railroad layouts for member usage, vintage restored steam plants, loading, maintenance, and storage facilities for member trains. With its commitment to preserving Southern California’s railway history and providing engaging experiences for visitors of all ages, the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum continues to be a cherished destination that celebrates the magic of live steam and scale model railroading.
